Is chocolate good for you?

In a study that will provide comfort to chocoholics everywhere, researchers in Sweden have found evidence that people who eat chocolate have increased survival rates after a heart attack — and it may be that the more they eat, the better.

The scientists followed 1,169 nondiabetic men and women who had been hospitalized for a first heart attack. Each filled out a standardized health questionnaire that included a question about chocolate consumption over the past 12 months. Chocolate contains flavonoid antioxidants that are widely believed to have beneficial cardiovascular effects.

The patients had a health examination three months after their discharge from the hospital, and researchers followed them for the next eight years using Swedish national registries of hospitalizations and deaths. After controlling for age, sex, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, education and other factors, they found that the more chocolate people consumed, the more likely they were to survive. The results are reported in the September issue of The Journal of Internal Medicine.

But before concluding that a box of Godiva truffles is health food, chocolate lovers may want to consider some of the study’s weaknesses. It is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so cause and effect cannot be definitively established.

Even though the researchers controlled for many variables, chocolate consumption could be associated with factors they did not account for — mental health, for example — that might reduce the risk for death.

The scientists did not ask what kind of chocolate the patients ate, and milk chocolate has less available flavonoid than dark chocolate. Finally, chocolate consumption did not reduce the risk for any nonfatal cardiac event.

Still, Dr. David L. Katz, an associate professor of public health at Yale who was not involved in the work, said the study added “an interesting element, following a group of adults who’ve had a heart attack and noting an impressive reduction in cardiac deaths.” While the study is observational, he said, “the broader context is reassuring.”

While the chocolate eaters in the study had a statistically insignificant reduction in the risk of death from any cause over the eight-year span, the reduced risk for dying of heart disease was highly significant. And it was dose-dependent — that is, the more chocolate consumed, the lower the risk for death.

Compared with people who ate none, those who had chocolate less than once a month had a 27 percent reduction in their risk for cardiac death, those who ate it up to once a week had a 44 percent reduction and those who indulged twice or more a week had a 66 percent reduced risk of dying from a subsequent heart event. The beneficial effect remained after controlling for intake of other kinds of sweets.

A co-author of the paper, Dr. Kenneth J. Mukamal, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard, said that there was considerable data from other studies suggesting that chocolate lowered blood pressure and that this might be a cause of the lower cardiac mortality found in the study.

Dr. Katz, of Yale, agreed that “there are many reasonable biological mechanisms” for a protective effect from chocolate.

“I like the study,” he said. “It adds to the general fund of knowledge we already have.”

Dr. Mukamal sounded a note of caution about the findings.

“Although this is interesting and provocative, chocolate does not come without costs,” he said. “For people looking for a small snack to finish a meal, this is a great choice. But it should be supplementing healthy eating and replacing less healthy snacks.”

It is good for those patients, who suffered from a heart attack, to hear that eating chocolate can increase their survival rates. As chocolate can lower one’s blood pressure and this prevents the relapse of heart attack.

Other than that, according to researches, chocolate can make one feels pleasant and energetic.

Cocoa in chocolate is the crucial substance, which can stimulate one’s brain through the nervous system. Thus, eating adequate amount of chocolate can help us to fight against exhaustion.

However, we cannot overdose the amount of chocolate. Eating too much of any food may cause health problems. For chocolate, overtaking of it may cause diabetes and increase blood cholesterol levels.

That’s why there is a phrase called “enough is enough”.

I can't surely tell that it was a good news or not. Eating chocolates can reduce the change of getting heart events,It is pleasure to hear that, for sure. But I'm afraid that those chocoholics' addiction on this kind of snacks will be worsen. Actually, what we need to do to keep away from heart events, is to exercise more, having a healthy and balanced diet, that will be more than enough.

I am happy to hear that patients can reduce the chance of having heart attack again. Actually I am a chocoholic especially for dark chocolate. It is because milk chocolate is too sweet for me. Moreover, Chocolate can let me know the real feeling in my deepest heart as the taste of bitterness can protrude the taste of sweet.Take for instance, when I am frustrated and want to cry, I will eat a piece of chocolate, and the taste of bitterness will cover the taste of sweet and I know that I'm really upset. When I eat the chocolate in a happy mood, I can only feel the taste of sweet without the bitterness, and I feel more joyful. Isn’t it amazing?

it's good to know that eating chocolate can reduce the opportunity of getting problems of heart. However, I think that we should do or eat anything in an appropriate degree. Otherwise, there may cause some other problem.
For instance, eating too many chocolate may cause the problem of diabetes. Also, we may suffer of cholesterol if we eat too many chocolate.
So. we must control ourselves to eat chocolates.
By the way, I love chocolates too. But I don't eat chocolates always. it just depends on what mood i am in at the moment. Actually, I think chocolates is really usefully when one is sad.

I think it's a conflict for all of us because there are some chemicals, for instance phenylethylamine can make us feel happy and relieve stress.
On the other hand, consuming excess amount of chocolate will increase the chance of tooth decay.
Therefore,is it worth eating so much chocolate in our daily live?I think the question is like how much red wine should we consume.
Last but not least,it is hoped that everyone can have a healthy body even though they don't depends on chocolate too much.

Chocolate is my favourite comfort food!:) But to be clear, it is the cocoa in chocolate that carry these effects, which means only DARK chocolate is good for your health.
Eating milk chocolate or white chocolate will only make you fat!

Besides increasing survival rates, antioxidants in chocolate can lower the risk of having neurological diseases (disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves throughout the body), reduce blood pressure as it doesn't raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Also, cocoa-based prescription drugs could potentially help treat diabetes, dementia and other diseases.

However, eating too much chocolate may cause obesity or a migraine (for some people). So we shouldn't eat too much of it. A few times a week should probably be enough! :]

chocolate is not a kind of thing that i like to eat, but after looking at this article, i was wondering whether i am dieing or not.....hoping and praying that this will not be true....i dislike the bitter taste of chocolate most, it makes me a kind of suffering. but i thing there must be a way to prevent heart diseases more than just eating chocolate, taking a healthy diet and more exercises may be good enough for me.

I think it is always a good idea to enjoy the right amount and not to indulge oneself too much at a time.

Jason, Josephine & Eric, you should tell me your name and class first. Later,

I agree with Jason. I am so confused whether it is a good idea. If we eat chocolate everyday or treat it as our meal, side effects may be formed. eg: obese problem, diabetes, etc
Umm, by the way, I love Godiva products and the chocolate fondue of hagendaz. They are absolutely delicious. Have you ever tried them before?
