Japanese wireless provider NTT DoCoMo on Thursday announced it has created two prototype handsets constructed of excess wood from trees felled during thinning operations designed to ensure a healthy forest. The devices were built through collaboration between Sharp, Olympus and More Trees, a reforestation project in Japan. Either prototype handset sports cypress wood and goes by the Touch Wood name. Despite the wood construction, the bodies are resistant to water, insects and mildew thanks to 3D compression molding technology developed by Olympus.
No artificial colors or paints are used, so the natural grain pattern, color and smell of the cypress wood are retained. Further hardware specs have yet to be announced, although the user interface sports photographic art from More Trees advocate Mikiya Takimoto.
The prototype phones will be shown at ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva and CEATEC Japan 2009 in early October.

Well ,i think that it is a good way to use the waste wood to make other products .This phone looks good at all .
In this case ,i think that the wood can be 100% used instead of being a waste was good because it can reduce the amount of waste in the tree-cutting process .But in fact ,it cannot reduce the waste at the end because when the phone are out of order ,people will throw it away ,then it will become waste again .But the idea was good ,and the most important is that ,people are now take care of our enviroment ,they try to use all the materials instead of leaving them in the forest ,that's good !
Re:Ng Tsz Sang
Prehaps we shouldn't use any mobile phone, we should use owl like those in Harry Potter since is can completely be decompsed.
I m planning to buy one and throw my iphone away.
Does anyone in my class want an iphone?
Write a 500 word essay to tell me how badly do you want it.
It is a brilliant idea that making good use of the excess wood to produce a phone. With high supervision of the preservation process, the quality is with guarantee.
Moreover, the name of the phone is really appropriate, having a double meaning. One is talking about a popular saying to reserve any bad luck that might come your way, due to a recent action you’ve taken or comment you’ve made. While the other means that you’re touching a phone that is made of wood.
If it is true that writing an essay can get an iphone, surely there will be students writing a 500 words essay with relevant points.
Bryan,
This "William Fu" is my ex-student called Andrea. He said he looks like James Dean and he dreams of himself becoming an athlete. I'll show you all his photos and stuff later in my lesson.
Re:"William Fu"
Please stop fooling around, don't you have anything important to do?
Re : William Fu (Andrea)
Don't be ridiculous = =...how are you gonna buy an owl? Even if u bought one, what will you do? Tell it 'Hey, could you delivery this message to this person please?'...
then, when it'll fly out your window and never come back... ha ha!
'I want your iPhone' Essay:
I'd (Really x493) like to have your iPhone. xD
What I love about Japanese is their creativity. No matter what materials they're left with, they can always make good use of it. Like these phones made out of waste wood. Isn't this brilliant or what! :)
If all countries around the world use waste wood as part of the components of making phones, there wouldn't be any waste wood left for sure and therefore, protecting our environment.
P.S. I prefer the one at the bottom. The one on top looks like a...
It seems this is a great idea. But a more effective way is to cut down less trees. Sometimes we use a product, can we stand and think does we really require this ?
For those trees are an example. People didn't require too much woods after they cut it, and cause wastes.Besides recycling, one way to reduce wood wastages is to cut less trees.
Re Sarine:
Prehaps you have eat a lot of chicken, duck, goose whatever.
Therefore you dun trust them.
Actually they are very good mailman.
You should buy one to try. Although there is no refund policy in buying an owl...u can still roast yours.
Anyway, you are lovely...
What's ypur number?
Well I don't think that this is actually a good way to use the waste wood. I think that there may be other ways that can use those wood more wisely for example maybe use them in the energy reusing or on other things that can use more durable because mobile phone is not a thing that can use such a long time. However I also think that the phone is not bad since there is not many phones which is make of wood...
First of all , it's a nice idea to use waste wood to produce other products . Nowadays , after useing the wood to make furnitures or the other products . That wood is being useless , people only throw them into landfill .
As we all know , deforestation is a serious problem . The area of forest are decreasing because lots of people who are cutting trees everyday .
Making products by waste wood is a good idea , i hope that more and more digital products can make by waste wood !

Firstly, i dont think it is a new idea since nowdays many furniture have been used wood as raw material. The Company is just apply the idea in other products only.
Moreover, using the wasted wood as raw maternial actually dont help environment a lot, because the people are still logging down the trees continuously.
I think that's a good idea to use the excess wood to provid a mobile phone and this method can reduce the waste of wood. But if we want to reduce the waste of wood, why don't we protect the wood in stead of cutting it?
But those Japanese really done a great job for the trees ,although the price of this moblie phone might be very expensive.
For us,i think we should protect the nature and the environment from now on because we have responsibility to help the world but not only the Japanese wireless provider.
It's a great idea ! Although our lives can't give up any electronic equipments, we have the choice of how to reduce the destruction on the earth. But, this is only a choice of Japanese.. as i know, DoCoMo always manufacture CDMA phones that cannot be used ih HK.

RE: Andrea
For your information, it's not that I don't trust them, it's because owls are quite rare, I don't want to see them flying straight to the window and therefore killing themselves. I've got a better idea, why not u buy me a pigeon instead, and send it to school (6AB1 classroom please). If I received it, I'll tie a paper with my phone number on it's leg and send it back to u, ok?
Re: William Fu (Andrea)
I think u read too much Harry Potter. But I want your iphone.
I think it's a great idea to use waste wood to make prototype handsets. It can save lots of wood and solve lots of problem, such as flooding, soil errosion since deforestion causes thousands of problems.
I like this type of mobile phones since they are quite beautiful and I think I will like that kind of smell release from the phone

Oh! Andrea.
You should come to our class and join us. I'm sure you'll be the most popular one in the whole form.
Re Mr Fu
Haha....I don't think so. Please remember to bring his photos. =)
