Men Sleep on Mars, Women on Venus



Elderly women may complain about insomnia, but they really get more sleep than men their age.

That is the surprising finding of a Dutch study that used monitors and sleep diaries to assess the sleep patterns of almost 1,000 men and women ages 59 to 97 for 6 days, and found that the women slept a quarter of an hour longer, on average, than the men.

Yet when men and women were asked about the quality of their sleep, women were more likely to report it as poor.

“What we found is that men completely overreport their sleep — they have a strong tendency to make it sound better than it was,” said Dr. Henning Tiemeier, associate professor of psychiatric epidemiology at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam and principal investigator for the study, published in the Oct. 1 issue of the journal Sleep.

In fact, men did not sleep as well as women, the study found. They reported sleeping seven hours a night, but objective measures, including a monitor on the wrist that measured sleep time, indicated they slept less than six and a half hours. Their sleep was also more fragmented, possibly because they drank more alcohol than the women.

Though women reported more problems with their sleep, their reports were more accurate, Dr. Tiemeier said.

Are men just oblivious?

“One could say men have this gift of being more optimistic, that it’s a natural tendency,” Dr. Tiemeier said.

For me ,I think that every night i was worrying about how to sleep well .Although i lie down on the bed for long long time ,it is diffcult to sleep ,everyday i don't want to wake up ,because i love to lie on the bed instead of sleeping .
In my opinion ,i think that sleeping are not good for me ,actually i love the moment which i was not sleeping ,i love lie on the bed .
So maybe this is the reason why men are sleep less than women .
For my mother and sister when they lie on the bed ,they can sleep immediately ,what amazing ,just like they have a switch about sleep and wake up ...
In fact ,everyday i woke up i felt full of spirit ,but after that i felt very sleepy ,maybe the time that i sleep was not enough ,So tonight i will sleep earlier .

I think the men are just think that the sleeping problems for them are not too important.This maybe the reason why they didn't report so much problems about their sleeping.and i'm just sleeping for about 6 hours a day for those schooldays.I know that's not enough for me but i can't sleep earlier.It's because I can't fall asleep when i'm lying on the bed.Sometimes i felt exhausted and i really want to sleep.But finally it takes me about20-25mins to fall asleep and i hate that feelings...
I think the only reason why it takes such a long time for me to fall asleep is that i like thinking when i'm lying on the bed
and maybe i should stop this bad habit.

I remember that there is a news report saying that everyone has his own biological clock, which states that students’ biological clock will have a change at the age of 10, and they would like to go to sleep two hours later on an average. While at the age of 20, it’s the highest peak that people would like to sleep “early” at dawn, and their schedule will be back to normal when they’re 55 years old.

As Joe mentioned that he couldn’t sleep earlier at night, the above news report maybe a reason to explain why he couldn’t fall asleep even when he felt exhausted.

this article had cautioned us never sleep with ur gal, after a romatic exercise.
People may think sleeping with their parnet is sweet, as a matter of fact, u can only hv nightmare...echo through ur head whole night

In my opinion, men don't realize that they actually sleep worse than women, mostly because men have to focus on other matter, that's why they don't have spare time for assessing whether they sleep well or not. Also, people's biological clock will automatically adjust the length of your sleeping, that's why a person is not able to sleep for too long.
Another reason might be, women are pampered since childhood, therefore they always feel not enjoying their sleeping enough.

I always have insomnia when I was young..the feeling is really really bad.If the person always can't sleep as well,I think he will become carzy guy-_-

This article said than women sleep longer than men.There has a great example in my hm...is my mum!
When we wake up for the lunch,she's also sleeping on her bed.In this case,I think my mum the time gor sleep much more than me..!

Wow. I didn't expect this article would be that effective in getting you to talk about your sleeping habit. It is really important for all of us to get better quality of sleep every night. However, it is rather difficult in a city like Hong Kong. Still, we have to try our best to get more sleep every night no matter how difficult it is.

It is so difficult to have a good sleep, especially for adults. Because when we grow up, there will be more and more pressure. So many of us get insomnia. And, I am very jealous of the babies since they can sleep for 20 hours a day.

The report said that women get more sleep than men. But I think it is not really true. I think we have consider the pressure of that guy have, the occupation and the sleeping condition.
